Bro. Fred challenged us to move from individual experiences with Jesus to collective expressions of God's love—passing the baton of salvation, restoration, burden-bearing, and perseverance from life to life, so that when one wins, we all win together.

Pass the Baton

Bro. Fred Hall • September 28, 2025 • Galatians 6:1-10

Reflection

In this continuation of our "Making the Shift" series, Bro. Hall used a powerful relay race analogy to show us that spiritual growth isn't about individual performance—it's about successfully passing the baton from one believer to another. Just as Fred Jr. ran the 4x4 relay in high school, where success depended on each runner completing their leg and successfully handing off the baton, our spiritual lives require us to receive God's grace and then pass it forward to others who need restoration, burden-bearing, and encouragement.

The context matters: Paul was writing to Galatian Christians who were abandoning their faith, deceived by false teachers into returning to legalism and paganism. In this environment, Paul reminds them that freedom in Christ demands we look outward—restoring the fallen, bearing one another's burdens, sowing spiritual seeds, and persevering in doing good to all people, especially fellow believers.

The big idea: Moments with Jesus should launch us into ministry for Jesus, which creates movements for Jesus. We transition from an individual experience to a collective expression of God's love by purposefully restoring the fallen, intentionally bearing burdens, living out the principle of sowing and reaping, and persevering in doing good—passing the baton of grace from hand to hand, life to life.

Summary

Key Takeaways

Ministry Flows from Moments to Movements: When God saves you, He doesn't want you to just relish the moment—He demands that those moments usher you into ministry for Jesus.

"Your moment with Jesus is when God saves you... Now, it isn't enough for you to just simply relish in the moment or bask in the relationship that you have through salvation. Now, God demands that those moments that you've had with Jesus now usher you into ministry for Jesus."

Restoration Requires Spiritual-Mindedness: Our responsibility isn't to scrutinize, categorize, or ostracize people caught in sin—it's to restore them with gentleness.

"No matter how you look at the person caught in sin, no matter what the view is, the reality is, it's our Christian responsibility to restore."

Burden-Bearing Is Intentional: Real ministry means getting in the trenches with fellow believers, not waving from a distance saying "I'll be praying for you."

"What I'm going to do is I'm going to get in the trenches with you. I'm going to pray with you. I'm going to call you. I'm going to be your workout partner. We going to have devotionals."

What You Sow, You Will Reap: God cannot be mocked—whatever seeds we plant in ministry (or selfishness) will produce a harvest in due season.

"If you plant thorns, guess what's going to grow in your life? Thorns. You plant weeds, guess what's going to grow in your life? Weeds."

Discussing & Applying the Sermon

About Restoring the Fallen:

  • How do you typically respond when you hear about a fellow Christian caught in sin—with judgment or with restoration?

  • What does it mean to restore someone "in the spirit of gentleness"?

  • Why must we examine ourselves before helping restore someone else?

About Bearing Burdens:

  • What's the difference between casually saying "I'll pray for you" and actually bearing someone's burden?

  • How can we intentionally get in the trenches with brothers and sisters who are struggling?

  • Why is comparing ourselves to others dangerous to our spiritual growth?

About Sowing and Reaping:

  • What spiritual seeds are you currently sowing in your life and ministry?

  • How does the principle of sowing and reaping apply beyond financial giving?

  • What does it mean to "not grow weary in doing good"?

About Passing the Baton:

  • Who passed the baton of salvation, restoration, or encouragement to you?

  • Who in your life needs you to pass them the baton right now?

  • How can our church move from moments with Jesus to creating movements for Jesus in our community?
